"Thinning Veils"

Jaeger is a visual artist from New England who explores the mediums of both photography and painting. In Thinning Veils, Jaeger has used the camera to paint a portrait of New England’s tranquil landscapes whose beauty cloaks the social conservatism of the region’s rural counties. The isolation felt in these regions lies in stark contrast to New York City, where social liberalism seemingly veils the lack of material means and poisonous industrialized environment. The subject of Jaeger’s photos shifted due to this contrast. In an environment where the beauty of a natural landscape has been destroyed, it has been replaced by a focus on the landscapes found in figurative and anatomical compositions.
Simon Rosenthal is a painter from Washington DC who works primarily with acrylics. Seeking to subvert the function of portraiture associated with classical modes of painting, Rosenthal uses irony and satire as a tool to expose and critique the dark absurdity of oligarchical politics, power, and digital manipulation in the modern world. Relying upon a visual language of internet memes, Rosenthal’s paintings demonstrate the way in which mass access to information simultaneously veils and unveils cultural decay.
